Prominent crypto investor Justin Sun last week paid $6.2 million for a banana taped to his wall that he won at an auction.
It may sound strange, but it’s not about the banana itself, but about art, memes, and the cryptocurrency community.
The artwork, nicknamed ‘Comedian,’ was created by Maurizio Cattelan, an Italian artist known for his unusual creations.
The ‘banana’ art became famous in 2019 during an art event in Miami. At the time, it sold for a staggering $120,000.
Three versions of the artwork exist, with one in a museum, and the other purchased by a private collector.
Recently, one of them was resold at Sotheby’s, a renowned auction house, where Sun won the bid, beating out six other bidders and paying for it in crypto.
But the interesting thing is that Sun didn't actually get the banana; instead, he got a certificate proving the authenticity of the art, a roll of ribbon, and 'instructions' on how to display it.
Since the banana would rot and need to be replaced, Sun planned to eat the banana as a unique experience and a way to honor the fruit in art history.
While this may seem strange, it shows that modern art is unpredictable and has an unpredictable level of creativity.
